Why do so many Americans love living in Da Nang?

Because Da Nang gives Americans the life of a US beach city for a fraction of the price. Rent runs a quarter to a sixth of what my clients paid in Austin, Denver or San Diego, the beach is a public one ten minutes from the airport, crime is low, and people here are genuinely glad to meet Americans.

I have placed American clients in Da Nang since 2019, from retired couples on Social Security to software engineers keeping Pacific time. Their reasons barely change from one year to the next. They want the ocean, a smaller monthly bill, a safe street and a city small enough to learn in a month. Da Nang gives them all four at once.

Americans come to Da Nang for the rent and stay for the beach, the food and the people.

How much cheaper is Da Nang than a US city?

Roughly a third to a quarter of the cost once rent is included. On Numbeo's September 2026 data, living costs including rent are 179 percent higher in Austin, 199 percent higher in Denver and 278 percent higher in San Diego than in Da Nang.

Numbeo's rent figure is a citywide average. In my own listings, a furnished one bedroom in An Thuong runs $570 to $840 a month on a lease of six months or longer, with electricity, water and building fees on top. That usually means a modern building a few minutes' walk from the sand.

The difference is what Americans talk about most after their first month. The rent on a San Diego one bedroom covers a luxury two bedroom here, which runs about $1,150 to $1,920 a month, with plenty left for dinner out every night. The luxury rental guide shows what that budget gets you.

What is it like to live in a beach city this size?

Easy, because the city is built along the beach rather than beside it. My Khe beach runs the length of the east side of Da Nang with free public access, a promenade and palm trees, and the airport sits about ten minutes from the sand. Most of my American clients swim or run on the beach before work at least a few days a week.

Getting here from the US takes one connection. There are no nonstop flights from the United States to Da Nang yet, but the airport has direct routes to Taipei, Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok. EVA Air and STARLUX both fly from the West Coast to Taipei and on to Da Nang, which makes Los Angeles and San Francisco the simplest places to start.

The weather suits a beach life too. From February to August the city is dry and sunny, and residents spend the rainy months from September to December on indoor work, cafes and trips. The month by month guide covers each part of the year.

Will you miss American food in Da Nang?

Not for long, because you can have both. Da Nang's own food is the reason many Americans stop cooking: a bowl of noodles at a local shop costs 30,000 to 50,000 dong, about $1 to $2, and the seafood places along the Son Tra coast sell the morning's catch by weight. When you want a taste of home, the city has proper burgers, pizza and steak.

Is Da Nang safe for Americans?

Yes. The US State Department rates Vietnam at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, the lowest of its four advisory levels, and Da Nang scores as markedly safer than Austin, San Diego or Denver on Numbeo's crowd sourced crime index.

Violent crime against foreigners is rare here. The State Department's advice for Vietnam is the same common sense you would use in any US downtown: keep your passport in the apartment safe and your phone in your pocket in crowded places.

Vietnamese attitudes toward Americans are among the warmest anywhere. In Pew Research Center's survey, 76 percent of Vietnamese held a favourable view of the United States, rising to 89 percent among adults under 30. My clients feel it daily, from the neighbour who brings over fruit to the coffee shop owner who remembers their order.

Language is solved faster than people expect. Staff in An Thuong cafes, coworking spaces and apartment buildings speak English, Grab shows the fare and route before you book, and I handle the Vietnamese on leases and landlord calls for my clients.

Da Nang is safer than the US cities most Americans move from, and friendlier to them than almost anywhere.

How do Americans get a visa for Da Nang?

Online, through Vietnam's e-visa. US citizens can stay up to 90 days on one, and the official portal at evisa.gov.vn usually approves applications by email in about three working days.

1. Check your passport. It needs at least six months of validity left on the day you arrive.
2. Prepare two files. A scan of your passport photo page and a passport style photo on a white background.
3. Fill in the form at evisa.gov.vn. Enter your dates and choose Da Nang International Airport as your port of entry.
4. Pay by card. Choose multiple entry for $50 if you plan weekends in Bangkok or Seoul during your stay.
5. Print the approval. Bring it with your passport and hand both to the officer on arrival.

Where do Americans live in Da Nang?

Most choose one of four areas on the beach side of the Han River: An Thuong, the My An beachfront, Son Tra or southern Ngu Hanh Son. Pick the area by how you want to spend your week, then choose the apartment inside it.

Since July 2025 An Thuong and My An are officially part of Ngu Hanh Son ward, but listings, landlords and Facebook groups still use the old names. The Son Tra and My An comparison goes street by street through the two areas Americans choose between most.

Pick the neighbourhood for your week first. The right apartment is easy to find once the street is right.

Can you work US hours from Da Nang?

Yes, and the setup is already in place. Vietnam's median fixed broadband speed reached 307 Mbps in July 2026, seventh in the world on Ookla's index, coworking spaces run fibre, and several stay open late for calls with the US.

The rhythm most of my remote clients settle into is simple: their own work in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, and US meetings in the evening. What do Americans do on weekends?

They take day trips, because four of Vietnam's best known sights sit within an hour of An Thuong. Hoi An's old town, the Ba Na Hills, the Hai Van Pass and the Marble Mountains are all easy to reach by Grab or motorbike and back in time for dinner.

Hoi An is the one Americans return to most. Since Da Nang merged with Quang Nam on 1 July 2025, the old town is inside the same city, and many clients keep a Saturday routine of a tailor fitting in the afternoon and dinner by the river after dark. What is healthcare like for Americans in Da Nang?

Good, with English speaking doctors at two providers that handle most foreign patients. Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital covers emergencies and specialist care, and Family Medical Practice Da Nang, a foreign run clinic in Hai Chau, covers everyday GP visits.

Most of my American clients carry an international health insurance plan, since Medicare generally does not pay for care outside the United States. With a plan in place, a routine visit is booked in English, often on the same day, and the bill goes straight to the insurer.
